Waterproofing your RC car ESC, servo and receiver with CorrosionX

As any other RC car enthusiast we also like to drive in snow, mud or rain, and we all know electronics and water don't mix well. There are many ways to waterproof your electronics and even allow the car to be submerged in water, but most of them require special batteries, waterproofed ESC and some specially designed trays and such in your car. There is also the possibility of owning a "waterproofed" speedo that is actually only moisture resistand and far from being completely and utterly protected from the water that enters your car.

One of the best all around methods of waterproofing your electronics that lately many people tried is treatment with the CorrosionX and other similar products. The method is fairly simple - you dip the electronics (or just apply enough of it if you are using spray bottle) in CorrosionX and it forms thin layer on every metal surface that doesn't allow the water to contact it. The film is really thin but it is durable enough to get a grip on surfaces that are rarely brushed and washed under pressure.

After we contacted Scandex AG., they offered to us even better solution - we form the same thin layer of CorrosionX and then, after it dries, we add CorrosionX HD, as it has better resistance to water and elements (it is meant for equipment used in the open) and also forms thicker layer witch adds even more protection.

Of course, such threatment voids the warranty of every products it is used on, but in the RC world warranty is already underrated. Nevertheless - CorrosionX film on the ESC PCB is still much less vissible protection than applying silicone glue or liquid tape all around and it doesn't look as messy too. Furthermore you can still use these to protect the ESC after you apply CX.

The main problem when you try to fight water entering your electronics are not all the prevention steps like adding rubber seals and liquid taping all the openings, but the fact that air also brings moisture in rainy days and in the snow, and it will condense on your electronic equipment, thus damaging it the next time you use it. By covering all metal surfaces with CorrosionX and all the rest with CorrosionX HD you will have protection from moisture that is already inside the ESC, servo or transmitter. And when it comes to servos - you should only use CorrosionX and not the HD inside them, as CX is also a great lubricant (and it also protects bearings, screws and any other metal parts you have).

Another great thing about CorrosionX is that it sticks to metal and removes rust - and also prevents it from ever appearing agan. Sure, your spur gear might get some oxidized look after time as it is constantly in contact with the pinion gear, but most parts are covered so well, that they will neve contact air or water again.

The video above shows how we tested CorrosionX with waterproofing a small servo, but on the later video below you will find even better test - we used a 150 Amps ESC this time and then we put it in the snow outside inside a Trophy truck. We will soon show you that you can fully submerge an ESC in water once it is processed with CorrosionX as well...
